Fiji’s burgeoning football scene is gearing up for a significant milestone with the establishment of Bula FC, the country’s first professional football franchise. As they prepare to debut in the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Professional League next year, Bula FC has announced its leadership team, which includes Marc McElrath, managing director of McDonald’s Fiji, as the club’s chairman and Anushil Kumar as acting chief executive officer. Kumar brings a wealth of experience from his eight years with the Fiji Football Association, where he rose from media officer to general manager operations, overseeing tournament logistics and planning.
Bula FC’s board will feature prominent figures, including Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel, as the association remains the majority stakeholder in the club, alongside business leaders Wella Pillay and Jai Singh. Additionally, Fiji FA vice-president Naziah Ali Krishna has been appointed acting chief commercial officer, recognized for her contributions to promoting women’s football in Fiji.
The name “Bula FC” is deeply rooted in Fijian culture, symbolizing hospitality and unity, and is reflected in the club’s motto: “One Vanua, One Team.” The official crest incorporates traditional Fijian elements, showcasing the strength and heritage of the nation across all 14 provinces. Bula FC is set to establish its office base next week.
Following a recent wave of developments in Fijian football, Bula Boys FC—an entity different from the national men’s team—has also been cleared to participate in the inaugural OFC Pro League starting in January 2026. The league will witness an eight-club lineup, featuring teams from neighboring Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, and more. Fiji FA chief executive Mohammad Yusuf has highlighted the strategic importance of this structure, offering local players a platform to hone their skills and advance their careers through professional competition.
This new league represents a historic opportunity for Fiji, creating pathways for elevated competition and regional growth. With a clear licensing framework and a competitive model similar to that of the Fijian Drua in rugby, Bula Boys FC aims to enhance football standards throughout Oceania, providing a promising future for dedicated athletes in the region.
With this dual emergence of professional teams, the enthusiasm for football in Fiji is palpable, signaling a bright future filled with potential for local talent to shine on both national and international stages. The groundwork is being laid for a successful and exciting competitive future in Fijian football.
