Fiji has taken a significant step toward enhancing its commitment to scientific research and environmental sustainability through the launch of a cutting-edge research vessel named ‘Yau Dikevi’ in Lami. The government views this vessel as a substantial investment aimed at promoting oceanic exploration and safeguarding the nation’s rich marine resources.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officially commissioned the vessel, noting that it is outfitted with advanced scientific tools that will transform it into a valuable floating laboratory. He emphasized that, despite its modest size, the ‘Yau Dikevi’ is equipped with state-of-the-art technology capable of conducting a variety of crucial marine studies.

The vessel will enable scientists to perform marine geology and coastal surveys, map the ocean floor, assess vulnerable coastal regions, study tectonic activity, and delve into the processes that shape underwater environments. These research initiatives not only contribute to global scientific knowledge but also equip Fiji with the necessary tools to protect its marine resources for future generations.

Rabuka highlighted that the vessel’s operations would not only focus on national interests but also benefit the broader region. This milestone was achieved through collaboration between the government and the local shipping sector, with special recognition to Silverstone Pte Ltd.

In conclusion, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude towards the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources for their hard work in bringing the ‘Yau Dikevi’ to life. Following its inauguration, the research vessel has commenced its first expedition to Nukulau, symbolizing hope and progress in Fiji’s journey towards sustainable marine stewardship.

This development showcases Fiji’s proactive approach to addressing environmental challenges and enhancing scientific research capabilities, paving the way for meaningful contributions to both local and global maritime science. It embodies hope, collaboration, and dedication to preserving marine ecosystems.
