Fiji is set to enhance its scientific exploration and commitment to environmental sustainability with the launch of its sophisticated research vessel, ‘Yau Dikevi’, which was commissioned yesterday in Lami. This vessel represents a significant stride forward in advancing oceanic research and protecting the country’s marine resources, according to the Fijian government.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officiated the commissioning ceremony, highlighting the advanced scientific survey tools that equip the vessel. He described the ‘Yau Dikevi’ as not just a vessel, but a floating laboratory and a symbol of hope for the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources. Despite its compact size, the Prime Minister emphasized that it is fitted with cutting-edge equipment necessary for conducting significant marine geological and coastal surveys, mapping the ocean floor, and identifying vulnerable coastal areas that are essential for supporting climate-affected communities.

These research efforts will significantly contribute to global scientific knowledge while enhancing Fiji’s capability to protect its marine resources for future generations. The vessel’s activities will also resonate regionally, showcasing the collaborative effort between the government and the local shipping industry, particularly with Silverstone Pte Ltd.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Rabuka expressed gratitude to the staff and management of the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources for their unwavering dedication to bringing this project to life. He hopes that the ‘Yau Dikevi’ will navigate the waters with purpose, fostering discoveries, promoting collaboration, and strengthening Fiji’s commitment to being custodians of its rich marine environment. Following the commissioning ceremony, the RV Yau Dikevi has commenced its maiden voyage to Nukulau.

Overall, this initiative not only reflects Fiji’s dedication to scientific advancement but also illustrates a hopeful future for environmental preservation and collaboration within the region, inspiring a collective effort to safeguard marine ecosystems.
