Fijians now have access to the nation’s inaugural certified cyclone-engineered steel home, designed specifically to endure Category 5 cyclone conditions. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made this announcement during the launch of Cyclone Engineered Certified Affordable Housing at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.
Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized the importance of providing homes that protect families and offer peace of mind amidst the growing threats of climate-related disasters. He stated, “Fiji deserves homes that can stand strong, protecting our people regardless of the forecast.” This innovative housing solution represents a collaborative effort among the government, industries, and communities, showcasing a blend of modern engineering, sustainable materials, and traditional values.
The ongoing vulnerability of Fijian communities, particularly those facing climate-related disasters, was acknowledged by the Prime Minister. For many years, families in these communities have endured the devastating effects of cyclones on their homes. Yet with the introduction of these cyclone-resistant structures, Fiji is taking significant strides toward securing enhanced safety and stability for its citizens.
Under the leadership of Sunil Pal from Professional Homes and Consultant Limited, the company responsible for this innovation, similar cyclone-resilient homes and schools have been constructed across the Pacific, with successful projects in Vanuatu and Tonga. Recognizing Fiji’s urgent need for affordable and resilient housing, the company is now establishing local operations to provide various housing solutions, including commercial buildings and concrete homes.
Director Shiraz Shah expressed their commitment to contributing to the housing crisis in the face of climate threats: “These cyclone-engineered homes are designed not just to meet technical standards but to bring peace of mind to Fijian families.”
The efforts in Fiji reflect a broader recognition of the pressing need for housing that can withstand natural disasters, as previously detailed in government announcements about constructing climate-resilient housing units aimed at addressing similar challenges in the nation. The government has reiterated its dedication to ensuring housing is recognized as a right for all citizens, promoting sustainable and eco-friendly construction practices in alignment with global trends.
As one of several initiatives targeting affordable housing solutions, this development brings hope for a future where Fijian families can feel secure in their homes, regardless of the challenges posed by changing weather patterns and increasing cyclone activity. The collaborative spirit and focus on resilience in these housing initiatives symbolize a positive step toward sustainable living conditions for all Fijians.
