The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport (MPWMST) has officially established the Engineers’ Registration Board (ERB) in alignment with the Engineers’ Registration Act of 1976. This critical development was announced by Paula Baleilevuka, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry, who stated that the Act mandates all individuals intending to practice as engineers in Fiji to register with the newly formed Board.
Baleilevuka emphasized the importance of this regulatory measure, noting that it enhances professional standards, ensures public safety, and promotes accountability within Fiji’s engineering sector. The ERB, comprised of an eight-member team, convened for its inaugural meeting on December 5, 2025. During this meeting, the board members focused on essential administrative and management issues, setting the groundwork for effective governance prior to the formal commencement of the registration process.
In a bid to foster transparency and ensure stakeholder engagement, public consultations will be conducted before the engineer registration process begins. These consultations aim to raise public awareness regarding the registration requirements and procedures.
Baleilevuka reiterated the Ministry’s dedication to reinforcing regulatory frameworks that uphold infrastructure standards, protect public safety, and enhance professional excellence across Fiji. This initiative not only underscores governmental efforts to regulate the engineering profession but also reflects a broader commitment to improving community welfare and safety through responsible engineering practices.
