The Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospital in Nadi has officially launched its Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) chamber, marking a significant advancement in healthcare for chronic wounds, burns, decompression sickness, and diabetic foot ulcers. The inauguration took place with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasizing the importance of this innovative treatment in combating pressing health issues in Fiji.
Professor Prasad highlighted the critical situation regarding non-communicable diseases, particularly diabetes, which he noted as the leading cause of premature death in the country. He stated that Fiji experiences one amputation due to diabetes-related complications every 12 hours, underscoring the urgent need for effective healthcare interventions. “The launch of HBOT is a major step forward in improving health outcomes and reducing the need for amputations,” he said.
The newly operational HBOT chamber will be available 24/7, designed to enhance recovery times significantly and restore patient health more effectively. This service not only aims to treat local patients but also to draw in individuals from neighboring Pacific Island nations, positioning Fiji as a healthcare leader in the region.
Professor Prasad further expressed optimism that the introduction of HBOT could lead to enhanced collaborations with regional healthcare providers and support the growth of medical tourism. He noted this initiative as reflective of Fiji’s commitment to upgrading its healthcare infrastructure, promising better treatment options and improved health outcomes for its citizens.
In addition to the HBOT launch, the event also saw the introduction of a new Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program that offers healthcare discounts to active cane growers, reinforcing efforts to improve healthcare accessibility in rural communities.
This progressive development in healthcare signifies a hopeful future for many patients suffering from chronic conditions, as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy may lead to fewer amputations and better overall health outcomes. Through such initiatives, Fiji is not only addressing immediate healthcare challenges but is also nurturing a vision for a healthier, more resilient population.
