Fiji is making significant strides in its preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Scotland, guided by a funding model that emphasizes collaboration among the government, the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC), and national sporting federations.

FASANOC’s chief executive, Vanessa Kilner, outlined that the financial burden to attend the Games is traditionally divided into three equal parts: one portion funded by the government, another by FASANOC, and the final third covered by the national federations. Despite this structure, Kilner noted that FASANOC often takes on a greater share of the financial responsibilities, alleviating pressure on the federations.

The projected cost for each athlete to travel to Glasgow is approximately $16,000. Kilner explained that although an equal split would require federations to cover over $5,000 per athlete, FASANOC has reduced this amount to about $1,500. She was clear that athletes themselves bear no financial burdens, insisting that all costs fall solely on the federations.

Kilner also highlighted that federations are informed well in advance about major games and should maintain sustainable long-term fundraising plans. However, she has expressed concern about a concerning trend in which some federations have started passing financial obligations onto athletes, which undermines the supportive partnership model intended to protect competitors.

Currently, Fiji’s provisional Commonwealth Games delegation is estimated to comprise around 72 members, although this number may fluctuate as some sports continue to finalize their qualifications. Kilner mentioned that costs could potentially be lowered further if more sponsorships or revenue streams materialize. She also commended the Fijian government for its ongoing support, particularly the National Sports Commission’s commitment to funding Fiji’s participation in the Commonwealth Games.

Fiji’s proactive approach in securing financial support and ensuring athletes are not overburdened with costs reflects a strong commitment to fostering a healthy sporting environment that prioritizes the well-being of its competitors.
