The Bilalevu Cemetery crossing project in Nadroga has officially been commissioned, providing much-needed relief to families in Navula, Loma, Bita, Bilalevu, Tuvuto, and surrounding settlements. For many years, these communities faced significant challenges accessing the cemetery during wet seasons due to flooding. This new crossing allows safe and dignified access even in adverse weather, following a collaborative community effort.

Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, highlighted the project as a reflection of the shared commitment between the community and government. By leveraging the community grant initiative, the government partnered with local grassroots groups to realize this essential infrastructure, contributing $8,000, while the Bilalevu Cemetery committee raised the balance.

Shiu Pratap, the committee’s secretary, emphasized the significance of this development, remarking that it transforms a formerly perilous endeavor into one of hope and safety. He recounted occasions when mourners risked their lives attempting to cross floodwaters to attend funerals.

This project aligns with broader government efforts to enhance rural infrastructure across Fiji, underscoring the commitment to addressing local needs through community partnership initiatives. The Bilalevu crossing is part of a trend of similar infrastructure developments, such as the completion of the Naseyani Bridge and the impending opening of new bridges and crossings in other parts of Fiji. These projects collectively support community resilience, connectivity, and accessibility, demonstrating the potential for sustainable progress and dignity in local infrastructure planning.

By investing in such initiatives, Fiji is not only improving access and safety but also fostering unity and collective action within its communities, paving the way for a hopeful and inclusive future.
