The Fiji Government is enhancing its national strategy to combat human trafficking and people smuggling with significant investments and improved border security measures. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that Cabinet has approved two key initiatives this week: a $500,000 allocation to aid in the fight against trafficking in persons, and the implementation of Advance Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) systems as part of a broader border modernization strategy.

This announcement comes on the heels of Parliament’s recent repeal of the Registration of Skilled Professionals Act 2016, a decision the Government believes will fortify Fiji’s border management framework. Since assuming office, the Coalition Government has prioritized counter-trafficking measures, leading to an increase in investigations, better victim identification processes, and enhanced coordination to connect victims with essential support services.

In collaboration with civil society organizations, the Government has established a Standard Operating Procedure for victim identification and created a centralized case management system. Additionally, the National Action Plan on Anti-Trafficking has been updated to ensure coordinated actions across various government agencies.

Oversight of these initiatives is maintained by an inter-ministerial taskforce, guided by the Office of the Prime Minister, which includes representatives from the Ministries of Justice, Policing, Immigration, and Finance. This taskforce is also conducting reforms aimed at reinforcing Fiji’s border security, including a thorough review of the Immigration Act 2003.

Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized that while progress has been made, there is still much work ahead, particularly regarding the strengthening of law enforcement responses. He noted that joint investigations involving Immigration, Customs, and Police are nearing completion, with improving prosecution and conviction rates being a high priority. The Government remains committed to fulfilling its international obligations and upholding a zero-tolerance policy towards human trafficking.

Fiji’s proactive approach demonstrates its commitment to creating a safer environment for its citizens and maintaining its integrity on the international stage. The measures being implemented indicate a strong resolve to tackle these complex issues and support victims effectively.
