The Fiji National Security and Defence Review (NSDR) has been introduced as a strategic framework aimed at addressing the various complex challenges that jeopardize the sovereignty and stability of Fiji. During its launch at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua emphasized that the current security landscape is fraught with issues such as cyber threats, climate change, transnational crime, and geopolitical tensions.
Tikoduadua highlighted the necessity for Fiji to remain agile and proactive in facing these challenges. A key component of the review is its advocacy for a holistic approach to security, engaging the entire government and society. Within this structure, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force are essential players, but they must collaborate with other government bodies, civil organizations, and the private sector to effectively enhance national security.
“National security is not the responsibility of any single entity; it is a collective responsibility that involves all of us,” he stated.
The Editorial Board that contributed to the review includes Professor Satish Chand (Chair), Associate Professor Shailendra Singh, Assistant Professor Ana Rokomokoti, and NSDR Independent Lead Jim Sanday. Community consultations will enable government and civil society to provide crucial data for the NSDR.
