Fiji Unveils Bold Security Drive: New Police Hub and Major Budget Push

The Fijian government is intensifying its commitment to tackle crime and drug abuse by making substantial investments in the Fiji Police Force and enhancing policing infrastructure. At the inauguration of the newly opened $36 million Nakasi Police Station, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized that safety and security are vital for the nation’s development and economic progress.

The government has significantly increased the police budget to $240 million, with provisions for recruiting an additional 1,000 officers. This initiative aims to strengthen community policing and enhance the police response amid rising crime rates. Prasad declared the coalition’s determination to combat pressing issues like drug trafficking, human trafficking, and cybercrime, reinforcing that these efforts are supported by stronger resources, updated laws, and international partnerships.

Highlighting the link between safety and sustainable development, Prasad stated, “Without safety and security, there can be no sustainable development, investment, or improvement in the quality of life for our people.” He praised the Fiji Police Force for regaining public trust and reiterated the government’s ongoing support for providing the necessary tools and infrastructure to secure communities.

This effort aligns with the broader strategy of increasing resources to the police as outlined in recent budgetary discussions. Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua has also voiced that community engagement is crucial in addressing the drug crisis. He described it as a national emergency requiring collective responsibility across society. In alignment with this vision, the government’s plans include the establishment of a new Counter-Narcotics Bureau aimed at proactively tackling drug threats.

These initiatives reflect a hopeful trajectory for enhancing public safety and strengthening the police presence in Fiji. By fostering collaboration between law enforcement and the community, the government aims to create a secure environment conducive to investment and growth, ensuring a brighter future for all Fijians. The ongoing partnership efforts and significant resource allocations symbolize a shared commitment to effectively combatting crime and fostering community well-being.
