Fiji is progressing with its National Identification (ID) program following the first meeting of a steering committee established to oversee the initiative. Co-chaired by Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor Ariff Ali and Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, the committee aims to lay the groundwork for a standardized and universal National ID that will enhance access to essential services for citizens.
Governor Ali emphasized the collaborative effort among the government and various stakeholders, noting that this initiative will streamline the delivery of both public and private services. He highlighted the importance of creating a digital ID framework to foster security, efficiency, and inclusivity. In alignment with this, Deputy Prime Minister Kamikamica articulated that the Fiji National Digital ID would empower citizens by providing them with a reliable means of identification.
Justice Minister Siromi Turaga added that a unified national ID should serve as the single proof of identity, illustrating the critical role it plays in combating poverty and enhancing digital public infrastructure. The introduction of digital IDs will minimize the repetitive collection of identity information, which is often cumbersome for citizens.
The committee also addressed practical aspects during their meeting, including drafting necessary legislation, establishing working groups, and setting a projected budget and timeline for the initiative, which is expected to unfold over the next 36 months. Regular updates will be communicated to the Cabinet, ensuring transparency and stakeholder engagement throughout the process.
