Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) has officially rolled out its Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) services, a state-of-the-art treatment designed to assist patients with chronic wounds, burns, decompression sickness, and diabetic foot ulcers. The launch took place at the PSH facility in Nadi, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, inaugurating the service.
The newly available Hyperbaric Chamber operates around the clock and aims to speed up recovery times while significantly lowering the necessity for amputations—a pressing issue in Fiji that stems from high rates of diabetes-related complications. Professor Prasad highlighted the urgency of addressing diabetes, noting that an amputation occurs every 12 hours in the country.
“This marks a significant advancement in our healthcare system and focuses on improving health outcomes while reducing amputations,” he stated. Furthermore, the introduction of HBOT is expected to attract patients from other Pacific Island nations, positioning Fiji as a leading destination for healthcare services in the region.
The HBOT service is anticipated to enhance patient recovery and contribute to the overall health of the population. Professor Prasad affirmed, “The incorporation of HBOT at PSH Hospitals underscores Fiji’s dedication to upgrading its healthcare infrastructure.” This initiative also opens avenues for collaborations with regional healthcare providers and could entice medical tourism, enhancing Fiji’s status as a hub for advanced medical services.
In addition to HBOT, the launch event also introduced the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program, which provides healthcare discounts to active cane growers in Fiji, reinforcing the government’s commitment to affordable healthcare, particularly in rural areas.
Professor Prasad noted, “The SCGF Loyalty Program is part of our sustained effort to back the sugar farming community by ensuring access to reduced consultation fees and other medical services.”
He further elaborated on the Coalition Government’s plans to modernize Fiji’s healthcare infrastructure, detailing key initiatives like the Indian Government-supported 100-bed super-specialty hospital and enhancements to the CWM Hospital.
“Prioritizing healthcare remains central to our development agenda,” he concluded. “By investing in healthcare infrastructure and innovative treatments, we are fostering a healthier future for all Fijians.”
The launch of HBOT alongside the SCGF Loyalty Program positions PSH as a frontrunner in healthcare innovation, enhancing access to advanced treatments while supporting the health of Fiji’s populace.
This development not only addresses immediate healthcare needs but also signifies a broader commitment to improving health systems in Fiji, ultimately fostering a healthier community that can thrive.
