Women facing high-risk pregnancies are set to benefit significantly from enhanced medical care with the launch of a new fetal scan unit at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM) in Suva. This advanced facility is the result of a $125,000 investment from the International Women’s Association (IWA), and it aims to improve the early detection of complications in pregnancy.
The IWA-MFM Fetal Scan Unit boasts a cutting-edge 3D ultrasound machine that was officially transferred to the hospital’s Ante-Natal Clinic. IWA president Judy Compain highlighted that this initiative builds on the successful establishment of the organization’s High Risk Clinic in 2018. She stated that the new technology will enable healthcare professionals to detect complications sooner, leading to timely interventions that can save lives, particularly for women with pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes or HIV.
Compain expressed her gratitude to the healthcare workers involved in making this facility a reality. She also acknowledged various partners, including the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service and the Katalyst Foundation, who contributed to the project. “Small actions done with sincerity can create big changes,” Compain remarked, emphasizing that the facility will serve thousands of mothers and babies in the coming years.
This development coincides with broader efforts to upgrade healthcare services in Fiji. As noted in previous initiatives, such as the introduction of portable ultrasound machines across multiple health facilities, these advancements demonstrate a commitment to improving access to maternal and child healthcare throughout the nation. Recent upgrades have been made at various hospitals, including the introduction of state-of-the-art CT and X-ray equipment, enhancing diagnostic capabilities and healthcare delivery across Fiji.
As healthcare infrastructure continues to evolve, initiatives like the new fetal scan unit at CWM Hospital represent a hopeful advancement in medical care, underscoring the importance of community support and collaboration in creating a healthier future for all.
