Fiji’s judiciary celebrated the grand opening of the newly constructed Ba Court complex, a state-of-the-art facility valued at $29 million. This significant development represents a decisive step towards decentralizing judicial services, making them more accessible to the people of Fiji.
During the inauguration, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized the Coalition Government’s dedication to fostering a peaceful and prosperous Fiji. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding fundamental human rights and individual freedoms while enhancing respect for the rule of law and ensuring all citizens have meaningful access to justice.
Rabuka pointed out that the new Ba facility is designed to alleviate the workload of the Court while providing modern amenities. An important aspect of this complex is the establishment of a High Court, which will enable litigants to avoid the long journey to Lautoka for High Court matters.
The new Ba High Court will handle appeals from the Central Agricultural Tribunal as well as Civil, Criminal, and Family Court appeals, thereby serving not just the Ba Province but also surrounding areas such as Ra, Tavua, Bukuya, Magodro, and Nadarivatu.
The event attracted senior members of the judiciary, cabinet ministers, and other dignitaries, highlighting the collaborative spirit involved in achieving judicial advancements. In his closing remarks, Prime Minister Rabuka commended the judiciary for its continuous improvements in fulfilling its constitutional mandate and delivering justice. He called for unified efforts to promote sustainable development in Fiji and create a resilient future for upcoming generations.
This development is a hopeful sign for the people of Fiji, as it shows a commitment to improving access to justice and ensuring that individuals and families can seek the legal recourse they deserve, paving the way for a more just society.
