Fiji Unveils 20 Education Reforms to Modernize Classrooms

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro has officially approved 20 significant educational policies, marking a pivotal step towards modernizing and enhancing Fiji’s education system after over a decade of stagnant policy development. This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to addressing the evolving needs of the educational landscape.

The approvals were reached following extensive discussions involving senior officials, external partners, and teacher unions. These consultations were crucial in ensuring that the reforms align with the realities faced in classrooms and the broader national priorities.

The new policies encompass a wide range of crucial areas, including teacher appointments, behavior management, child protection measures, the Fiji Education Management Information System (FEMIS), guidelines for mobile phone usage in schools, curriculum and assessment standards, occupational health and safety, school excursions, boarding operations, school canteens, volunteer engagement, emergency preparedness, the community utilization of school facilities, enterprise education, and more.

According to Minister Radrodro, these reforms are designed to establish clearer standards and enhance accountability while focusing on a student-centered approach throughout the education system. The upgraded policies aim to create a stronger framework for teachers, ensure better protection and wellbeing for students, and foster modern, safe, and supportive learning environments.

Radrodro emphasized that these reforms represent a significant milestone towards building a high-quality, future-oriented education system that positively impacts every Fijian child. This strategic overhaul promises a brighter educational horizon, offering hope for a more engaged, empowered, and prepared generation of learners in Fiji.
