The Fijian Government has announced an unprecedented $153 million scholarship allocation, aiming to significantly enhance support for tertiary students. Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad unveiled this initiative during the presentation of the 2025-2026 National Budget, marking a historic moment for education in Fiji. This funding will aid 24,653 students, achieving the highest number of fully funded scholarships ever awarded by the government.

Professor Prasad emphasized the government’s commitment to alleviating financial burdens for young people, providing them with expanded opportunities for success. In an effort to facilitate greater accessibility and equity, the allowance rates for various scholarship categories have been increased. High achievers now receive an annual sum of $7,600, up from $6,800, while students with disabilities will benefit from a raised allowance of $8,600. Additionally, a new equity allowance of $1,000 has been introduced for students from low-income households with deceased parents.

To further address educational disparities, particularly in rural areas, the government has lowered the Year 13 cut-off mark for degree scholarships to 240 from the previous 250, acknowledging the unique challenges faced by under-resourced schools.

There are also enhancements for overseas students, with meal allowances rising from $150 to $250 per week starting Semester 2, and a new visa processing support initiative offering $3,000 per student. The Tertiary Education and Vocational Training (TVET) scholarships will now extend to overseas technical training in fields that are not offered locally.

Moreover, a new contribution scheme has been introduced, allowing for partial tuition funding on a 50/50 cost-sharing basis and incorporating shorter bond requirements, offering students more flexible options and reduced service obligations upon completion.

Professor Prasad concluded by highlighting the critical importance of aligning education with the needs of the labor market. This initiative aims to foster a skilled, inclusive, and future-ready workforce in Fiji.

This substantial investment in education reflects a hopeful outlook for centuries to come, empowering students with the tools and resources necessary to thrive both academically and professionally. The government’s commitment to these educational enhancements stands as a testament to its dedication to the future of Fiji’s youth.
