Fiji’s Cabinet has given its approval for a comprehensive 10-year Blue Economy Framework aimed at promoting the sustainable utilization of ocean and marine resources. This strategic framework is designed to align and enhance various initiatives related to the Blue Economy, unifying efforts across several sectors including fisheries, ocean-based tourism, aquaculture, maritime transport, renewable ocean energy, and marine conservation within a single national policy.
As the country’s primary Blue Economy policy, this framework will also facilitate Fiji’s adherence to international and regional commitments regarding marine resource management. To ensure its effective implementation, a dedicated Blue Economy Task Force will be established, charged with overseeing and coordinating the framework’s rollout.
This initiative signifies a progressive step towards sustainable development in Fiji, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to environmental stewardship while balancing economic growth. The emphasis on integrated management of marine resources demonstrates a visionary approach that could serve as a model for other island nations facing similar challenges.
