Fiji National University (FNU) has reaffirmed its strong commitment to combat violence against women and girls through its Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Strategy and Action Plan for 2024–2026. The university has made it clear that any form of violence or discrimination against women is unacceptable within its community and beyond.

Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, the Vice-Chancellor of FNU, emphasized the institution’s dedication to creating an inclusive and equitable environment. She stated, “At FNU, we are committed to creating an environment where every individual feels valued, respected, and safe. Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights, and it has no place in our society.”

Highlighting the essential roles women play in various sectors, she urged all Fijians to recognize their contributions to the nation’s progress. “Women are integral to Fiji’s progress and success. They are no longer defined by traditional gender roles but are key contributors to education, business, health, and governance. It is imperative that we support and empower them to thrive,” Professor Nabobo-Baba remarked.

As the nation observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, under the theme “UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” the Vice-Chancellor extended a message of solidarity. She encouraged every Fijian to reflect on their role in promoting a culture of respect and safety, advocating against injustice, and supporting survivors. “Together, we can break the cycle of violence and build a future where women and girls can live with dignity and freedom from fear,” she urged.

The GEDSI Strategy and Action Plan serves as a guiding framework for FNU’s initiatives to promote gender equality and create a safe and inclusive environment for all.

This commitment from FNU is a hopeful sign for the broader fight against gender-based violence, fostering a community where every individual can thrive and contribute to societal progress. Through collective efforts, both at the institutional and societal levels, a significant impact can be made in reducing such violence and promoting equality.
