In a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing community engagement through sports and boosting local economic growth, the Fiji Sports Council and the Agricultural Marketing Authority have formed a dynamic partnership. This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding, will focus on the Fiji Sports Council’s Grassroots Rugby 7s and Volleyball Development Events scheduled for 2026. The initiative is designed not only to promote physical activity but also to empower the youth and encourage rural entrepreneurship.
The events will serve as marketplaces for local farmers, vendors, and small business owners, enabling them to showcase their products and produce while also fostering a celebration of local sporting talent. Gilbert Vakalalabure, Chief Executive of the Fiji Sports Council, emphasized the strategic significance of this partnership, asserting that “this collaboration brings together two strong pillars of national identity—sports and agriculture.” He highlighted how both sectors play crucial roles in empowering youth and promoting healthier, sustainable lifestyles.
Jone Sovalawa, Executive Chair of the Agricultural Marketing Authority, expressed pride in this partnership, denoting its potential for a lasting impact on communities. He stated, “The AMA is proud to partner with the Fiji Sports Council in an initiative that supports farmers, vendors, and small business owners while promoting unity and national pride.”
Both organizations are dedicated to harnessing the power of sports to inspire and uplift communities, believing that this collaboration will drive national development. By intertwining the excitement of sports with agricultural sustainability, they aim to cultivate stronger, healthier, and more resilient Fijian communities.
This initiative can be seen as a positive evolution in grassroots development, reminiscent of previous successful events like the Grassroots Fiji Nacula 7s tournament, which showcased local talent and drew significant community support. The collaboration reflects a broader trend in Fiji’s commitment to harnessing local sporting events as vehicles for economic growth and community unity. Overall, this partnership serves as an encouraging example of how sports and agriculture can work hand in hand to foster a vibrant and connected community.
