The Fijian government is ramping up its efforts to address the pressing issue of illicit drugs, with a focus on collaboration and coordinated enforcement as key components of a comprehensive national strategy. Minister for Policing and Communications, Ioane Naivalurua, underscored the urgency of the situation, stating that traditional methods are no longer sufficient in tackling the country’s drug challenge. He emphasizes the need for decisive and united actions to ensure the safety and well-being of the nation.
In a significant move, Naivalurua announced that the Fiji Police Force will be collaborating with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces to form a Joint Task Force. This initiative follows consultations with relevant stakeholders, including the Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs, and aims to enhance coordination, intelligence sharing, and enforcement against drug-related threats in the country.
Beyond just security forces, Naivalurua is calling on a range of community stakeholders including faith-based organizations, traditional leaders, the business community, civil society, and local residents to collectively embrace their responsibilities in combating drug issues. He reassured the public that all joint operations would adhere to legal standards and be clearly focused on ensuring the safety and security of people, countering any claims of ulterior motives as unfounded and alarmist.
The Minister highlighted that while enforcement plays a vital role, it is only one element of the solution. He stressed the importance of sustained efforts across various domains such as border control, maritime surveillance, intelligence gathering, public awareness, treatment, rehabilitation, and community support.
Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Naivalurua warned that the fight against drug abuse is a long-term struggle that requires intensified efforts and unwavering commitment from all sectors of society. This united front is critical as Fiji confronts the growing threat of illicit drugs, and the government is hopeful that this collaborative approach will lead to significant progress in ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
