The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) along with the Fiji Police Force have launched a joint task force aimed at tackling the increasing issue of drug trafficking across the nation. This collaboration follows discussions between RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai and Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu at the RFMF Headquarters. The leaders highlighted the urgent need to address the rising rates of drug-related crimes.

This task force will focus on identifying and dismantling drug trafficking networks, particularly in areas identified as high-risk. Plans for targeted operations have already been established, and the joint effort is expected to commence soon. Major General Kalouniwai emphasized the military’s dedication to assisting the police in strengthening national security and ensuring public safety through this partnership.

Both the RFMF and the Police Force regard this collaboration as critical in tackling the complex nature of Fiji’s drug issues. They are also mindful of the social challenges contributing to this crisis, such as poverty, limited healthcare access, and educational gaps. While the military’s role will primarily be supportive, it aims to enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts.

Commissioner Tudravu previously mentioned that ongoing government efforts have already resulted in significant drug seizures and arrests. He stressed the importance of including local communities in these operations, promoting a collaborative approach to combat drug abuse and trafficking.

As the task force prepares to launch its operations, there is a sense of optimism about the path forward. This partnership not only reflects a united effort to confront drug-related challenges but also emphasizes the importance of collaboration between military and police forces. By actively engaging the community, Fiji is taking significant steps toward creating sustainable solutions for drug abuse and trafficking, ultimately fostering a safer and healthier environment for all its citizens.
