The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and the Fiji Police Force have announced the formation of a joint task force dedicated to combatting drug trafficking throughout the country. This initiative is the result of discussions held between RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai and Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu at the RFMF Headquarters. The leaders addressed the urgent need to confront the escalating problem of drug-related crimes.
The task force will focus on identifying and disrupting drug trafficking networks, especially in high-risk areas. Strategies for targeted operations have been agreed upon, with joint efforts expected to commence shortly. Major General Kalouniwai reaffirmed the military’s commitment to supporting the police in enhancing national security and public safety through this collaboration.
The two forces view this partnership as crucial in addressing the multifaceted nature of Fiji’s drug issues, including links to underlying social challenges such as poverty, limited access to healthcare, and educational disparities. While military support will mostly be of a supportive nature, it aims to bolster the overall efficacy of law enforcement and enhance public safety.
In a previous statement, Commissioner Tudravu indicated that ongoing government initiatives are already leading to significant drug seizures and arrests. He emphasized a community-centric approach to these operations, engaging local residents in efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking collaboratively.
As the joint task force prepares to initiate its operations, there is an optimistic outlook for the future. This cooperative approach symbolizes a unified commitment to addressing drug-related challenges, thereby fostering a safer and healthier environment for all Fijians. Such initiatives highlight the importance of collaboration between military and police forces, as well as active community engagement, to create sustainable solutions to drug abuse and trafficking in Fiji.
