The 20th edition of Fiji’s largest cancer fundraiser, Bushell’s Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea (BFBMT), was officially kicked off in Suva today. This event, which started in 2006, has grown in prominence over its 19 years of operation, significantly contributing to cancer awareness and the provision of life-saving support.

The launch took place at the Motibhai Group’s office in Walu Bay, the main sponsor of the event. Abraham Gomes, the Marketing and Business Development Manager at Motibhai, announced a new approach for this year, combining the launch event with the morning tea fundraiser. Gomes encouraged businesses and organizations to participate by hosting their morning tea events from May to June, highlighting the critical role this campaign plays in raising funds and awareness against cancer, a leading cause of death in Fiji due to non-communicable diseases.

Fiji Cancer Society CEO, Belinda Chan, emphasized the widespread impact of cancer, which affects many families across Fiji, either through personal diagnoses or the loss of loved ones. She noted the financial and emotional burdens that come alongside cancer, urging the community to take part in BFBMT fundraisers to enhance support and advocacy in this area.

This year, the initiative also includes a new cafe program inviting local cafes and small restaurants to contribute a percentage of their proceeds to the Fiji Cancer Society throughout June, aiming to collectively raise an additional $500 from each participating venue.

Chan further underscored the importance of lifestyle changes such as healthy eating and exercise to combat the rising incidence of cancer, with recent statistics showing a troubling increase in new cases reported in Fiji.

The collaborative efforts of organizations and businesses in support of BFBMT and the Fiji Cancer Society represent a hopeful path forward, reinforcing community solidarity in the fight against cancer. Together, they aim to bolster awareness and resources necessary for patient care, making a real difference in the lives of those affected by this disease.

The BFBMT campaign illustrates not only the community’s willingness to engage in support but also the importance of awareness initiatives in fostering a healthier future for all Fijians.
