Fiji Unites Against Religious Hate: Calls for Harmony and Unity

A Fijian government minister has denounced recent sacrilegious acts against the Hindu community, following an incident in which pages of the Holy Ramayan were torn at the Vunicuicui Shiv Mandir in Labasa. Mosese Bulitavu, the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, asserted that all religious groups have the right to worship freely without the threat of religious hatred.

The incident occurred on a night significant to the Hindu community, coinciding with their prayers for the birth of Lord Rama. In response, Bulitavu emphasized that the 2013 Constitution guarantees every individual the right to practice their faith, reinforcing that the preservation of national unity and harmony is crucial for Fiji’s prosperity. He shared sentiments reflecting the collective outrage, stating that like Christians, Hindus should not face acts of violence or sacrilege.

Davendra Prakash, a temple devotee, voiced the frustration felt within the community, while Labasa Town Council special administrator chairperson Paul Jaduram condemned the crime and highlighted the need for enhanced security measures around religious sites. Jaduram noted that such disrespect undermines Fiji’s image as a hospitality hub and reflects broader issues of social malaise exacerbated by drug-related crime.

Recent comments from Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad echoed Bulitavu’s sentiments, condemning the desecration and calling for immediate police investigations. Prasad highlighted the importance of respectful dialogue among diverse faiths, pointing out that acts of sacrilege can threaten the social fabric of Fiji, a nation known for its rich cultural diversity.

As the community grapples with the implications of this incident, there is hope that it may catalyze meaningful conversations around interfaith understanding and respect. Such discussions are essential in the quest to heal and strengthen communal bonds, contributing to a more united and harmonious society in Fiji. The call for action and unity among various religious groups reflects a shared aspiration for peace and mutual respect.
