The increasing challenge of online pornography and child sexual abuse material in Fiji has raised significant concerns, prompting immediate action from both the government and various stakeholders. To combat these digital threats to the safety of women, children, and families, the National Taskforce Against Pornography (NTAP) recently convened to explore and implement effective strategies.
The meeting was co-chaired by Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran and Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, highlighting the collaborative effort in addressing these pressing issues. A key point discussed was Fiji’s alignment with international initiatives to combat child exploitation, particularly with the presentation from Naomi Trewinnard of the Lanzarote Convention Secretariat. This convention provides vital frameworks and tools to enhance child protection systems and improve responses to instances of child exploitation in Fiji.
Capacity building was also a priority during the session. U.S. Embassy Special Agent Jeremy Clark shared insights on global trends related to child exploitation from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). He emphasized that NCMEC has already trained 15 Fiji Police investigators on advanced case management techniques, which strengthens local law enforcement capabilities in tackling these crimes.
The meeting also featured contributions from regional partners, including Acting Australian High Commissioner Clair McNamara, who discussed Australia’s strategies to combat online pornography and protect vulnerable populations in the Pacific region. She underscored the need for a coordinated response to technology-facilitated gender-based violence, which remains a significant issue across Pacific communities.
The commitment of Fiji to tackle the issue was further reflected in updates from local leaders, including Director Arieta Tagivetaua and CEO of the Telecommunication Authority of Fiji Prit Chand. They provided insights into ongoing national initiatives and highlighted the importance of multi-sector collaboration in addressing the challenges posed by online pornography.
Overall, the NTAP meeting reinforced the urgency to prioritize actions against online exploitation and child abuse, signifying a hopeful step towards creating safer environments for all Fijians. With continued collaboration and dedication, there is potential for significant advancements in safeguarding vulnerable populations against digital threats.
