Fiji Union Signals Imminent Strike at Aspen Hospitals: What’s at Stake?

The Construction Energy & Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF) is poised to issue a 14-day strike notice to Aspen Medical if concerns surrounding their demands are not addressed. Union Secretary General, John Paul, highlighted that the union represents approximately 200 members working at the Aspen Hospitals in Lautoka and Ba. The staff involved in this potential strike include chefs, cooks, ward assistants, pharmacists, maintenance workers, drivers (including ambulance operators), security personnel, as well as administrative and technical staff.

Mr. Paul emphasized that the decision to proceed with a strike comes after members expressed their frustration over prolonged delays in addressing their grievances. He mentioned that while the union is conscious of its responsibilities toward the public reliant on hospital services, members are now prepared to take action if necessary. The core issue lies in their demand for salary increases due to cost-of-living adjustments, which have not been implemented since 2017.

The union is urging government intervention to help prevent the imminent strike, underlining the urgency and seriousness of the situation.

This situation reflects a growing concern for fair compensation and recognition of essential workers who have continued to serve through challenging circumstances. It is hoped that open dialogue and collaborative discussions can take place to resolve the issues, benefiting both the workers and the public they serve.
