Fiji Union Prepares for Major Strike: What’s at Stake?

The Construction Energy & Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF) has announced its readiness to serve a 14-day strike notice to Aspen Medical, due to escalating concerns from its members. Union Secretary General John Paul highlighted that the union represents around 200 employees working at Lautoka and Ba Aspen Hospitals, encompassing a range of roles including chefs, ward assistants, pharmacists, and various support staff.

Mr. Paul noted that the union’s members have expressed their readiness to strike, particularly as they feel frustrated by delays in addressing their demands for salary increases. This unrest stems from unresolved claims for cost-of-living adjustments, which have not been implemented since 2017. The union emphasizes its responsibility to the public and has held off on any immediate action out of consideration for those relying on hospital services.

The union is now seeking government intervention to preempt a strike, stressing that its members can no longer continue in the “waiting game.” This decisive move signifies growing tensions in labor relations within the healthcare sector in Fiji and highlights the need for negotiations to ensure a fair resolution for the workers involved.

In light of these developments, there is hope that the government and Aspen Medical will engage constructively with the union, potentially allowing for meaningful dialogue that prioritizes the welfare of healthcare workers while maintaining essential services for the community.
