The Construction Energy & Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF) has raised significant concerns regarding Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) for allegedly violating international labor standards during an ongoing industrial dispute. In a letter addressed to the Fiji Trades Union Congress, CETWUF’s national secretary, John Paul, indicated that negotiations with EFL over the Log of Claims for the years 2024 and 2025 have reached an impasse following failed mediation efforts.

Mr. Paul stated that the union conducted a secret ballot in line with legal requirements, which has empowered the members to proceed with potential industrial action. “We are due to activate this mandate next week,” he confirmed.

Adding to the tension, Mr. Paul expressed that EFL management’s direct outreach to union members—asking them individually via official email whether they would join in any strike action—was perceived as intimidation and an undue interference in union operations. He argued that such actions breach ILO Convention 87, which safeguards workers’ rights to associate freely without employer meddling.

The CETWUF noted EFL’s majority government ownership increases the responsibility of the State to adhere to international labor conventions of which Fiji is a signatory. Mr. Paul highlighted the unsettling implications of EFL management’s actions on the Government’s commitments under international law.

To address these concerns, the union formally requested the support of the FTUC and its affiliates to file an official complaint against the Fijian Government over the presumed violations. Mr. Paul emphasized the need for solidarity during what he described as a critical period in defending the rights of union members.

In a counterstatement, EFL reiterated its commitment to respecting its employees’ rights to make lawful decisions regarding industrial action, adding complexity to the situation as both parties navigate this contentious dispute.

As tensions rise, the CETWUF’s proactive measures signal a determined effort to uphold labor rights amidst challenges. The unfolding developments will be pivotal in shaping the future landscape of labor relations in Fiji, indicating the union’s resilience in standing up for its members’ rights.
