The Pacific Sexual and Gender Diversity Network (PSGDN) has raised concerns regarding the alleged misuse of religious platforms in Fiji to disseminate harmful anti-LGBTQI+ rhetoric. According to the organization, religious leaders are reportedly using places of worship, free-to-air television, and social media to promote views that stigmatize and marginalize already vulnerable communities.

Loata Tucika, Interim Chief Executive of PSGDN, highlighted the importance of balancing freedom of religion and expression with the responsibilities that come with such rights. Tucika pointed out that when influential religious figures utilize their platforms to convey dehumanizing personal beliefs, the consequences extend far beyond mere words; such rhetoric fosters fear, legitimizes discrimination, and exposes real people to danger.

In response to this situation, PSGDN is urging religious leaders throughout Fiji to concentrate on their primary spiritual duties and refrain from using their platforms to incite discrimination or societal division. Additionally, the organization is appealing to the Online Safety Commission to actively oversee content broadcasted on free-to-air television, ensuring that religious commentary does not cross the line into harmful or discriminatory speech.

PSGDN remains committed to fostering respectful dialogue, promoting peaceful coexistence, and safeguarding the dignity of all individuals in the Pacific region, including those within the LGBTQI+ community. The network’s proactive stance reflects a hopeful endeavor to build an inclusive environment where all people are respected and valued.
