The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) Under-20 rugby team is gearing up for an exciting tour of New Zealand next month, with the primary objective of securing victories. Head coach Sireli Bobo shared details about the team’s preparations, revealing that they will convene for training starting January 3, ahead of their departure on January 29.

Bobo expressed his appreciation for the FSC’s organization of the Under-20 sevens series, which included five competitive legs across various locations, culminating at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on November 30. He noted the event’s strong turnout and the emergence of numerous talented young players who showcased their abilities week after week.

Following the series’ completion, Bobo announced the selection of the team, which saw fierce competition from clubs like Village Boys, QVSOBs, Ca’au, and Dominion Brothers. He highlighted that even lesser-known teams posed significant challenges to more established clubs, indicating a healthy competitive environment.

Fostering player development from grassroots levels remains a core focus for Bobo. He aims not only to win during the tour but also to provide valuable exposure for the young athletes. This tour will be particularly meaningful, as some players will be boarding an airplane for the first time.

Bobo emphasized that the formation of the team represents a long-term opportunity for these young players, paving the way for them to aspire to wear the national jersey in the future. This initiative not only cultivates athletic talent but also nurtures broader life experiences for the players.

In a general discussion of sports development, it’s clear that initiatives like this can prove significant to cultivating the next generation of athletes. The focus on both competition and personal growth is a promising approach that could inspire confidence and ambition in these young sportsmen.

Overall, the FSC Under-20 team is set for what promises to be a transformative experience, not just in terms of skills and competition, but also personally, as they embrace new opportunities on their journey in rugby.
