The Fijian Government has taken a significant step in enhancing its maritime sector by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the United Arab Emirates regarding the mutual recognition of seafarers’ certificates of competency. This pivotal agreement, signed in Dubai on January 14, 2026, opens new employment avenues for qualified Fijian seafarers on UAE-flagged vessels and throughout the broader Gulf region.

The MOU acknowledges Fiji’s position as a signatory to the International Maritime Organization’s Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) Convention. This recognition ensures that Fijian maritime qualifications align with global standards, providing greater confidence in the capabilities of Fijian seafarers.

Government officials highlight that this landmark agreement is poised to create numerous employment and training opportunities for Fijian seafarers, further bolstering Fiji’s reputation as a reputable maritime nation. The deal is anticipated to facilitate workforce development within the maritime industry, paving the way for expanded international pathways for Fiji’s maritime professionals.

This collaboration embodies a hopeful vision for Fijian seafarers, ensuring that they can compete effectively in the global maritime workforce while reinforcing Fiji’s commitment to maintaining high training and certification standards in the industry.
