Fiji U20 Women’s Team: A Historic Debut in Global Football

The Fiji U20 women’s football team has returned home after making their debut at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia. Although they faced significant challenges, suffering defeats of 11-0 against France, 9-0 against Brazil, and 9-0 against Canada during the group stages, their participation marks a significant achievement for Fijian football.

Defender Angeline Rekha reflected on the team’s experience, stating, “It’s a dream come true because hardly anyone gets qualified for it. People make sacrifices just to reach there.” The qualification was unexpected for many, including the players, who felt their dedication had finally come to fruition.

Rekha highlighted the crucial role of physical fitness and the need to adjust to the fast pace of international play. She mentioned, “For me, it was important to stay fit and to cope with the speed in the game. I wished for my team to get the tempo of the play.”

Despite the challenging results, the tournament offered the Young Kulas significant exposure to global competition, enriching their experience and understanding of high-level football.
