Fiji U19 Cricket Team Gears Up for High-Stakes World Cup Qualifier

The Fiji men’s under-19 cricket team is fully committed to enhancing their batting techniques, mental fortitude, and strategic game planning as they prepare for the upcoming ICC East Asia-Pacific World Cup Division One qualifier scheduled to take place in Japan from April 22 to 30. High Performance Manager Tomasi Nawaciono expressed confidence in the team’s preparations, highlighting the diverse talent drawn from various schools and cricket associations throughout Fiji.

Nawaciono noted that the squad includes players from prestigious institutions like QVS, RKS, John Wesley College, and Lami High School, as well as several other secondary schools and cricket associations, showcasing the rich pool of cricket talent in the nation. Four players who participated in the initial EAP qualifier in Darwin, Australia, where they secured a commendable second place, will also contribute their experience to the team.

Interestingly, one player from the U19 team has previously represented the senior men’s team in the T20 World Cup qualifier in Samoa in 2024, providing invaluable experience to the young squad. Although the team has shown strength in bowling, their current priority is to sharpen their batting skills to achieve success in the qualifiers.

Despite facing challenges, such as the limited access to suitable training grounds until recently, the team appreciates the support from the Suva City Council, which granted access to a cricket pitch last week for their preparations.

The upcoming tournament will undoubtedly present formidable competition, with strong contenders from Papua New Guinea and Japan. Overall, the current efforts being made by the Fiji under-19 cricket team reflect not only a dedication to skill development but also a bright future for cricket in Fiji on the international stage. This ongoing commitment to nurturing young talent could pave the way for further achievements in the sport.
