The Fiji U17 women’s national basketball team has arrived in Samoa, brimming with confidence, effective leadership, and a talented roster eager to enhance the nation’s reputation in the sport. After a successful year marked by impressive performances at regional tournaments, the team aims to build on that momentum at the upcoming Oceania competition.
A standout player in this campaign is Makaefa Savu, who has emerged as one of Fiji’s most promising young athletes. Initially picking up basketball just for fun, Savu’s journey through the sport has been remarkable, and she is now a pivotal centerpiece in the U17 squad. Reflecting on her past experiences, Savu expressed, “It was scary playing in the Melanesian Cup, going up against senior players, but it was also thrilling. I’m grateful for that experience. Now, I feel privileged to lead the girls who are representing Fiji for the first time.”
In 2025, she contributed to a gold medal victory at the FIBA Melanesian Cup and participated in Australia’s She Hoops Leadership and Confidence Program, gaining crucial experience that has molded her into a mature and poised leader for her team.
As the tournament approaches, Savu emphasizes the importance of maintaining composure, focusing on personal growth, and ensuring robust mental preparation. The FIBA U17 Oceania Cup and FIBA U17 Women’s Oceania Cup are being organized by the Samoa National Basketball Association, taking place in Apia from December 8 to 13. The top two performing teams will secure qualifying spots for the FIBA U18 Asia Cup and FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup next year.
With a combination of talent and experience, the Fiji U17 women’s team is set to make a significant impact on the international basketball stage, promising to inspire future generations of athletes in the process.
