The Fiji under-15 football team concluded their participation in the OFC U15 Development Tournament held in Wellington, New Zealand, with an impressive performance that showcased both resilience and growth. The team compiled a record of three wins, one draw, and one loss over five matches.
The tournament kicked off with a challenging start for Fiji, as they faced a narrow 0-1 defeat against the Solomon Islands. However, the team quickly rebounded, securing a 2-0 victory against the New Zealand Football Federation U15 team. This momentum surged significantly with a commanding 5-0 win against Vanuatu, which demonstrated Fiji’s attacking prowess. A thrilling match against New Caledonia ended in a 3-3 draw, but Fiji capped their tournament experience with a resounding 7-0 triumph over Papua New Guinea.
Head coach Marika Rodu commended his players for their dedication and the valuable lessons learned throughout the tournament. “The boys enjoyed their time, felt good, and learned a lot from this development tournament,” Rodu noted. He emphasized that the team’s focus extended beyond just the final scores; it was about enhancing their performances and gaining essential experience at this level of competition.
Rodu reported no significant challenges during the trip, highlighting favorable weather conditions and positive tournament organization. He praised the players for gaining exposure to artificial turf and expressed appreciation for the support from parents, some of whom traveled to witness the team’s journey.
Looking ahead, Rodu stated the next priority will be preparing for the U16 competition next year, building on the experiences and lessons from the tournament. His aim is for the team to return prepared to achieve even better results.
