The Fiji U-16 women’s soccer team secured their first victory at the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship, defeating the Cook Islands 2-0 in an important match held in Suva. Following a challenging 3-3 draw with Tonga, Fiji entered the match eager to earn a win to maintain their hopes for a semi-final spot.
Fiji took an early lead in the 14th minute when Sisilia Kuladina scored with a brilliant shot from just outside the box, placing the ball in the bottom left corner past the Cook Islands’ goalkeeper, Vahine Uini. Kuladina’s impressive performance followed her prior game, highlighting her skill.
Grace Lakavutu increased Fiji’s advantage shortly after, slipping past the offside trap to skillfully place the ball into the net, comfortably putting her team ahead by halftime.
Despite being behind, the Cook Islands put forth a stronger effort in the second half, challenging the young Fijian goalkeeper with several attempts, but she remained steadfast. The match concluded with Fiji earning three crucial points, which positioned them second in Group A.
