Inspire Fiji’s director, Ben Morrison, is advocating for increased sporting events across the nation, particularly in communities grappling with high crime rates. He argues that engaging the youth in positive, constructive activities through community-centric competitions can serve as an effective deterrent against the rising involvement of young people in criminal activities.
Morrison’s appeal comes on the heels of a successful Jittu Vuvale Fun Day hosted by Inspire Fiji, which saw an overwhelming turnout from the local community. He highlighted the vulnerability of youths during school vacations, a period when many lack structured activities, making them more susceptible to peer pressure and unlawful behavior.
“It’s not easy doing it by ourselves, so this initiative requires the backing of the community, government, and churches. We observe that the young people genuinely need this support, and they are grateful for it,” stated Morrison.
He emphasized the significant role sports can play in steering youths away from adverse paths, noting that the discipline and values fostered through sporting engagement can empower them to make better life choices. Through concerted efforts and collaboration, there is hope for cultivating a safer, more supportive environment for the youth in Fiji.
