The Fiji Tribe team of the Australia Football League (AFL) is gearing up for the Pacific Cup, which will take place in Brisbane, Australia, from November 14 to 24. This announcement was made by head coach Alipate Navuso during the unveiling of their training kits, generously provided by their sponsors.
Navuso emphasized the team’s rigorous preparation, noting they have been training intensively for the past seven weeks, with sessions held daily except Sundays. The team comprises eight seasoned players who have represented Fiji in prior world cups (2011, 2014, and 2017) and nine players who emerged from AFL Fiji’s pathway programs for youth aged 14 to 17, marking their debut on the senior team. Additionally, there are 11 newcomers who have recently taken up the sport, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting tournament.
Despite facing challenges in securing sponsorship due to the perception of AFL as a lesser-known sport in Fiji, Navuso expressed gratitude to their sponsor, Flame Tree, for their support. He believes that the combination of experienced players and the tenacity of the newcomers forms a significant advantage for the team. The focus during training has been on developing fundamental skills and enhancing the players’ fitness levels.
Notably, Navuso praised the dedication of the players, highlighting their admirable commitment and attendance throughout the training period. He also acknowledged the financial sacrifices made by players and their families in pursuit of success, as many have covered their own travel and accommodation expenses to prepare for the competition.
In conclusion, the Fiji Tribe team’s journey is marked by hard work, sacrifice, and determination as they aim for victory in the Pacific Cup. This dedication not only fuels their aspirations but also shines a spotlight on the potential growth of AFL in Fiji. With the support of sponsors and families, the team has a solid foundation to build upon as they represent their country on an international stage.
