The Fiji Tribe team of the Australia Football League (AFL) is gearing up for the upcoming Pacific Cup, which will take place in Brisbane, Australia, from November 14 to 24. Head coach Alipate Navuso shared the team’s ambitions during the unveiling of their new training kits, provided by their sponsors.

Navuso emphasized the team’s rigorous preparation over the last seven weeks, with daily training sessions up to Saturday, reserving Sundays for rest. The team comprises eight seasoned players who have previously represented Fiji in the world cups of 2011, 2014, and 2017, alongside nine emerging talents from the AFL Fiji pathway programs, which include the Under-14, Under-15, and Under-17 teams.

The squad also welcomes 11 new players who will be making their debut on an international stage. Despite the challenge of securing sponsorship due to the perception of AFL as a minor sport in Fiji, the team has received support from local sponsors like Flame Tree.

Navuso highlighted the complementary skills of both experienced and new players as a significant advantage. They have focused on perfecting fundamental skills and enhancing fitness, preparing for a competitive performance at the Cup. The newly introduced players are considered underdogs, eager to prove themselves and demonstrate their potential.

Impressively, the team has shown a remarkable commitment to training with full attendance, and Navuso expressed gratitude towards the sponsors and the families contributing to the players’ preparations. He acknowledged the financial sacrifices made by the players themselves, who have covered their travel and accommodation expenses for training in Suva.

This dedicated effort illustrates the team’s resolve and spirit amidst the challenges they face, fostering a hopeful outlook as they aim for success at the Pacific Cup.

The positive determination of the Fiji Tribe team, matched with the commitment from both players and sponsors, showcases the potential for growth of AFL in Fiji, possibly fostering greater interest and investment in the sport moving forward.
