The AFL Fiji Tribe team is gearing up for the upcoming Pacific Cup in Brisbane, Australia, scheduled from November 14 to 24. Head coach Alipate Navuso shared this goal during the unveiling of their training kits, provided by their sponsors.
Navuso highlighted the commitment of the team, stating that they have undergone seven weeks of rigorous daily training, with Sundays reserved for rest. The team’s composition includes eight seasoned players who have represented Fiji in the World Cups of 2011, 2014, and 2017, alongside nine emerging talents who have progressed through the AFL Fiji pathway programs for youth, covering Under-14 to Under-17 categories. Notably, this will be the first experience for 11 new players on the international stage.
While the team faces challenges in securing sponsorship—given the relatively minor status of AFL in Fiji—Navuso expressed gratitude for their main sponsor, Flame Tree. He emphasized that the collective skill and experience of the players are vital strengths as they prepare for the competition.
The focus during training has been on enhancing fundamental skills and overall fitness levels. Navuso pointed out that the eleven newcomers are positioned as underdogs and are eager to showcase their abilities on the field. He praised the players for their unwavering commitment, noting no absenteeism throughout their training period.
Navuso also took a moment to recognize the support from sponsors and the families of the players. He mentioned the financial sacrifices made by players, many of whom have covered their own expenses to attend training in Suva, reflecting their dedication to representing Fiji on a larger platform.
Overall, the team’s preparation signifies a confluence of passion, hard work, and the unwavering spirit of the players as they aim for success in the Pacific Cup. This tournament presents a valuable opportunity for the players, especially the newcomers, to gain exposure and further develop their talents in the sport.
In summary, the AFL Fiji Tribe team’s journey embodies resilience and teamwork, setting a positive tone as they head into the Pacific Cup, highlighting both the challenges and the shared commitment among players and supporters alike.
