The AFL Fiji Tribe team is gearing up for the Pacific Cup, scheduled in Brisbane, Australia, from November 14 to 24. This announcement was made by head coach Alipate Navuso during the unveiling of their training kits, thanks to their sponsors.
Navuso highlighted that the team has undergone rigorous training for the past seven weeks, with practices held daily except Sundays. The squad comprises eight seasoned players who have previously represented Fiji in the World Cups of 2011, 2014, and 2017. Additionally, nine players who have progressed through the AFL Fiji pathway programs, including the Under-14, Under-15, and Under-17 levels, are making their debut in the senior team.
The team also features 11 newcomers to the sport who will step onto the field for Fiji for the first time. While recruiting sponsorships poses a challenge since AFL is viewed as a minor sport in the country, Navuso expressed gratitude for the support from Flame Tree, their sponsor.
Navuso underlined that the combination of experienced players and those trained through local programs forms their strongest asset. The team has focused on both fundamental AFL skills and physical fitness in preparation for the competition. He praised the dedication of the players, noting that attendance has been consistent throughout training.
Navuso acknowledged the financial contributions from players and their families, as many have self-funded their arrangements to participate in training sessions. He expressed deep appreciation for their commitment and sacrifices leading up to the AFL Pacific Cup.
This endeavor illustrates the resilience and determination of the AFL Fiji Tribe as they strive to make a mark on an international stage. Their dedication, coupled with the community’s support, fosters hope for a successful outing in the upcoming tournament. With a blend of experience and fresh talent, the team is poised to represent Fiji enthusiastically.
