The AFL Fiji Tribe team is aiming for victory at the upcoming Pacific Cup, scheduled to be held in Brisbane, Australia from November 14 to 24. Head coach Alipate Navuso shared this ambition during the unveiling of their training kits, proudly sponsored by Flame Tree.

Navuso highlighted the team’s rigorous preparation, which has involved seven weeks of daily training sessions, with Sundays set aside for rest. Notably, the squad includes eight seasoned players who have previously represented Fiji in the World Cups of 2011, 2014, and 2017. Additionally, nine players from the AFL Fiji pathway programs, including those from the Under-14, Under-15, and Under-17 levels, are making their senior team debuts. The team also features 11 newcomers who have recently been introduced to AFL.

Despite facing challenges in securing sponsorship due to the sport’s perception as a minor one in Fiji, the team’s commitment remains strong. Coach Navuso expressed gratitude to their sponsor, Flame Tree, for their support. The blend of experienced players and newcomers is seen as a significant strength, with a strong focus on fundamental skills and fitness during training.

Navuso has praised the dedication of his players, noting consistent attendance throughout the training period. He also extended thanks to the families of the players for their support, as team members often cover their travel and accommodation expenses out of pocket. Their shared sacrifices reflect a communal effort toward success at the Pacific Cup.

This initiative is not just about competition; it encompasses personal growth and development for the players involved, making it a hopeful endeavor for the sport in Fiji and its representation on the international stage. The team’s hard work and commitment can serve as an inspiration for others in the region to engage with and support AFL.
