The Fiji Tribe team, part of the Australia Football League (AFL), is determined to clinch the Pacific Cup in Brisbane, Australia, from November 14 to 24. Head Coach Alipate Navuso made this announcement during the unveiling of their training kits provided by sponsors.
Navuso highlighted their preparations, stating they engaged in seven weeks of rigorous training, with sessions scheduled until Saturday, reserving Sundays for rest. The team’s composition includes eight seasoned players previously representing Fiji in three World Cup tournaments from 2011 to 2017. Furthermore, nine players who have progressed through the AFL Fiji pathway programs, covering Under-14, Under-15, and Under-17 levels, have made it to the senior team for the first time. Eleven new entrants will also represent Fiji, marking their debut in the sport.
Despite facing challenges in securing sponsorship due to AFL’s lesser prominence in Fiji, the team expressed gratitude to industry supporter Flame Tree. Navuso emphasized that the combination of experienced players and the skillset of the newly inducted members forms their greatest asset.
The training regimen has focused on improving fundamental skills and overall fitness, with the new players seen as underdogs eager to prove themselves. Navuso praised the players’ dedication, noting there has been no absenteeism during their preparations. He also extended appreciation to their sponsors and the families of the athletes for their support, mentioning that players have contributed their own funds for training expenses, demonstrating their commitment and sacrifice in preparation for the AFL Pacific Cup.
This story highlights the passion and dedication of the Fiji Tribe team, emphasizing their commitment to the sport despite facing challenges. Their unity and ambition convey a hopeful message about the potential growth of AFL in Fiji and their opportunity to showcase their talent on a larger stage.
