The AFL Fiji Tribe team is gearing up for the upcoming Pacific Cup in Brisbane, Australia, scheduled from November 14 to 24. This ambitious goal was shared by head coach Alipate Navuso during the presentation of their training kits from sponsors.
Navuso highlighted the team’s rigorous preparation, having dedicated seven weeks to daily training sessions, with Sundays reserved for rest. The team comprises eight seasoned players with previous World Cup experience from the 2011, 2014, and 2017 tournaments, alongside nine players who have advanced through the AFL Fiji pathway programs, including the Under-14, Under-15, and Under-17 levels.
In addition, the squad welcomes 11 newcomers who will represent Fiji for the first time. Despite the challenges of securing sponsorship due to the AFL’s status as a lesser-known sport in Fiji, the team has received support from Flame Tree, a partnership that Navuso greatly appreciates.
The head coach emphasized the blend of experience and fresh talent as a key asset for the team’s success, focusing on fundamental skills and fitness. He also recognized the hard work and commitment displayed by all players, with consistent attendance throughout their training period.
Acknowledging the financial sacrifices made by players, especially those from the western regions who traveled to Suva for training, Navuso expressed gratitude towards their dedication and the support from sponsors and families.
This determination and teamwork signal a hopeful outlook for the AFL Fiji Tribe as they approach the Pacific Cup. Their journey reflects not only their athletic aspirations but also a resilient community spirit that bolsters their resolve to excel on the international stage.
