The Fiji Tribe team from the Australian Football League (AFL) is gearing up to compete for the Pacific Cup in Brisbane, Australia, scheduled from November 14 to 24. Head coach Alipate Navuso shared this exciting news during the unveiling of their training kits sponsored by Flame Tree.
Navuso highlighted the team’s rigorous preparation, noting that they have undergone seven weeks of intensive training, with sessions held daily, except Sundays, which are reserved for rest. The team comprises eight seasoned players who have previously represented Fiji in the 2011, 2014, and 2017 world cups, along with nine players nurtured through the AFL Fiji pathway programs, including Under-14, Under-15, and Under-17 categories. For many of these athletes, this will be their first opportunity to play at the senior level.
Furthermore, 11 new players will also make their debut in the tournament, adding fresh energy to the squad. Despite the challenges in attracting sponsorship, as AFL is often perceived as a minor sport in Fiji, the team expressed gratitude to their sponsor, Flame Tree, for their support. Navuso emphasized that the combination of skill from the experienced players and the enthusiasm of the newer members forms the team’s greatest strength.
The focus during training has been on mastering fundamental AFL skills and enhancing fitness levels. The coach acknowledged the dedication of the players, noting there has been no absenteeism throughout their training period. He also expressed appreciation for the financial sacrifices made by players and their families, as they have had to cover personal expenses for travel and accommodation during preparations.
As the team approaches the Pacific Cup, there is palpable excitement and anticipation, showcasing the potential for growth in AFL within Fiji. With the commitment and sacrifices of both players and supporters, the Fiji Tribe is positioned to make a strong impact at the tournament.
In summary, the Fiji Tribe’s efforts reflect a community-driven spirit and a commitment to excellence in sports, bringing hope and ambition as they aim for success in the upcoming Pacific Cup.
