The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has announced that a candidate for the position of Chairperson is currently under review by the President, with an official announcement anticipated in the near future. This comes in the wake of the resignation of former Chair Dr. Marcus Brand.
Acting Chairperson and Commissioner Sekove Naqiolevu confirmed that the Commission is waiting for the formal decision from the President. “We are awaiting the announcement by the President on the new Chair. I believe a name is before him; he’s just going to announce it soon,” Naqiolevu stated.
Despite this leadership change, the TRC reassured the public that its operations will proceed without disruption. Commissioner Rachna Nath highlighted the Commission’s stability and independence, stating, “It’s important to understand that we were established by Parliament, and we have legal safeguards that ensure our continuity, stability, and independence regardless of people changing.”
As the TRC prepares for the imminent announcement of its new Chairperson, the organization remains committed to its mission of addressing historical injustices and fostering reconciliation across the nation. This commitment to continuity reflects the TRC’s dedication to the values of accountability and restorative justice, underscoring the importance of its role in promoting a harmonious society.
