The Government is poised to take decisive action against licensed operators found to be using drugs, including the potential cancellation of their licenses, according to Assistant Minister for Transport Naisa Tuinaceva. His remarks came in response to concerns raised by George Goundar, director of Goundar Shipping, regarding claims of drug use among seafarers.

Mr. Tuinaceva emphasized the Government’s unwavering stance against drug use, stating that efforts are being coordinated across all modes of transport to address this pressing issue. “The Government’s position in terms of drugs is very clear. We are doing our best – the Government is doing its best. We are all fighting for this. We want to stop it,” he affirmed.

The Assistant Minister highlighted the ongoing collaboration between transport authorities and the Fiji Police Force, aimed at strengthening laws and enforcement measures, particularly those pertaining to drug testing. He noted that initiatives are already in place to ensure that drivers and operators are subject to drug tests to confirm their sobriety while on duty.

Alongside enforcing drug testing, Mr. Tuinaceva indicated that severe penalties would be enforced for anyone found to be operating vehicles or vessels under the influence of drugs. “If that is the case, we are going to cancel the licence. It’s all part of our collective effort to combat drugs in the region,” he explained.

This crackdown is set to extend throughout the transport sector, both on roads and at sea. Mr. Tuinaceva reiterated that the Government will not tolerate drug use in any form within licensed operations, indicating that anyone caught would face stringent consequences, potentially including the stripping of their licenses.

“The fight against drugs is a top priority for us. We want to assist in fighting against drugs in our country,” he concluded, reflecting the Government’s commitment to maintaining safety and integrity within the transport industry. This proactive approach aimed at curbing drug-related issues demonstrates the Government’s dedication to creating a safer environment for the community and stakeholders in the transport sector.
