Fiji Trade Union Calls for Security Industry Law Review

The National Union of Workers (NUW) is urging the Government to review the laws governing the security industry. This appeal was made by Fiji Trade Union Congress (FTUC) General Secretary Felix Anthony in Lautoka.

Yesterday, the NUW signed a collective agreement with Evergreen International Fiji, covering all employment terms and conditions for workers. Evergreen International Fiji operates as Wormald Security and Guard Force in the country and is a leading provider of security services, specializing in electronic security, including monitoring intruder alarms, access control, CCTV, and electronic fire detection systems. Mr. Anthony expressed concerns about the security industry in Fiji.

“We are looking forward to working with them. We don’t have issues with Guard Force and hope we never do,” he said.

He highlighted the significant exploitation within the security industry, particularly by night operators who do not follow legal regulations and engage in wage theft. He mentioned a claim against one operator for approximately $3 million owed to workers due to unpaid overtime and unlawful deductions.

Anthony called on the Government to review the laws to ensure workers receive their legal entitlements and to create a level playing field for employers and employees. He emphasized the need for stricter inspections of these companies to ensure compliance.

Mike Jamieson, General Manager of the security company, expressed optimism that the signed agreement would lead to better outcomes for workers.
