The Fiji Police Force has implemented movement restrictions in Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki Town this evening due to rising floodwaters. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu announced that water has begun to infiltrate local shops, making it unsafe for residents to enter or exit these towns.
These precautions are aimed at safeguarding both the community and the infrastructure in the affected areas. ACP Driu emphasized the importance of protecting properties from potential opportunists during this time of crisis.
Currently, there are four active evacuation centers in the Western Division, housing 226 individuals, with that number expected to climb if rainfall persists. The main highway connecting Ba to Rakiraki has been closed to all traffic, and Tavua Town is now unreachable from its entrance, with Ba Town also closed off to vehicles.
Police teams are actively engaged in evacuating residents from disaster-prone areas and will remain ready to respond to emergencies throughout the night. The Fiji Police Force continues to monitor the situation closely.
In such challenging times, the commitment of local authorities to ensure public safety is commendable. Communities often come together to support one another during emergencies, fostering resilience and solidarity among residents. As the situation evolves, continued vigilance and cooperation will be crucial in overcoming these challenges.
